Repairing old granite walls in Cornwall

What goes into repairing or rebuilding an old Cornish granite wall so it matches the original and stands for years.

Why old walls fail

Most old granite walls fail slowly: mortar washes out, roots and water get in, and a section bellies out or drops. Left alone, a small bulge becomes a collapse.

Rebuild, do not cover up

The right repair is to take the failed section down to sound work and rebuild it in stone, not to patch it with blocks and render. A rendered patch never matches and usually traps water.

Matching the stone

We match the stone, the coursing and the pointing as closely as we can to what is already there, reusing the original stone where it is sound and sourcing granite to suit where it is not.

Cornish hedges

A Cornish hedge is a stone-faced bank with an earth core, not a hedge of shrubs. Repairing one means rebuilding the stone faces and packing the earth core properly, not just patching the gaps.
